There is vacancy for two PhD positions in information theory at the Department of Informatics. The positions are for a fixed-term period of 4 years with 25% compulsory other work (e.g. teaching duties). The workplace is the research center Simula UiB AS. Simula UiB is a research center owned by Simula Research Laboratory and the University of Bergen. The goal of Simula UiB is to increase the security expertise in Norway through research and education. The positions are within the Information Theory Section of Simula UiB. The successful candidates will use advanced information-theoretic and coding-theoretic tools to design new security and privacy schemes and derive fundamental performance bounds for such schemes applied to future distributed information systems. Distributed information systems include, but are not limited to distributing storage systems and distributed computing systems.

Data Science @ Uni Wien is a new research platform at the University of Vienna that presents a hub on all activities in data science at the University of Vienna. We have openings for five enthusiastic PhD students to establish an interdisciplinary research environment. InterDigital (IDCC) Europe currently has a research engineer position in its London office. The researcher will work on the design and development of next generation channel codes, including polar codes, particularly for beyond 5G applications. There is currently a postdoctoral scholar position available in Prof. Avestimehr’s research group at University of Southern California (USC), at the cross section of information theory, distributed computing, and data analytics. The project, which is funded by DARPA, will focus on development of various “coded computing” frameworks that combine coding with distributed computing to alleviate several bottlenecks in large-scale data analytics.
