About the IEEE Information Theory Society

Our Vision  is to be the pre-eminent community developing the mathematical underpinnings of information technology for the benefit of humanity.

Our Mission  is to support the open exchange of ideas in information theory, broadly construed, through publications, communications, meetings, outreach, education, mentoring, and recognition of excellence.

Information Theory  encompasses the processing, transmission, storage, and use of information, and the foundations of the communication process. It specifically encompasses theoretical and certain applied aspects of coding, communications and communications networks, complexity and cryptography, detection and estimation, learning, Shannon Theory, and stochastic processes.

Claude Shannon  was an American mathematician and computer scientist who conceived and laid the foundations for information theory. His theories laid the groundwork for the electronic communications networks that now lace the earth.

There are many benefits to joining IEEE becoming a member , including access to IEEExplore, discounted rates for conferences, and networking opportunities.
