20090316 Release Feedback

Request for comments and feedback on the latest website release

SixFeetUp has fixed a number of bugs and added new features to the software that powers our new Society website.  These changes can be reviewed before production release on the following website:

http://maint.itsoc.sixfeetup.com/

In addition to a number of bug fixes, significant updates include:

  • Rearranging "portlets" on the main homepage, e.g., News is moved to the left column
  • Adding a "My Society Activities" portlet that provides quick links to Committees and Chapters of which a logged in user is a member
  • Displaying more randomly selected papers in the Spotlights section

If you spot any bugs or have suggestions for improvements, please leave a comment by clicking on the button below.

Recent Changes

When I log in, I see on the left bottom the box "Recent Changes". There, on top of the list is my name, mentioning a change yesterday. I'm not aware that I have edited my profile for the last couple of weeks. Moreover, according to the info in my profile, my profile has been locked by Nick 2 weeks ago, so it should have been changed at all.

Login causes Recent Changes

Plone account have a "Last Login" field that gets updated at login, triggering the outcome you describe. This is a default behavior of the software, but we could change it.

In the new release if you click on the "Profile Directory" breadcrumb on someone's profile, you can search through profiles. At present the directory is hidden from the navigation, but we could make it visible. We went with search because it was not clear what the best browser view for profiles would be.

about registered members

Another thought that perhaps is not related to this particular release of the website: there is at the moment no way to browse through members. The profile of the registered members can only be found in two ways: either it randomly shows up on the front page when you access the main page, or you search actively for a particular person and find his profile in the search results. Doesn't have a public profile make it desirable to have a browsable list of these people (e.g. under "People")?

I goofed and responded to this one in the previous response.

Exposed email addresses

Posted by Mehul Motani at Mar 20, 2009 02:23 AM
I noticed that users' email addresses are displayed to anyone viewing the website. This allows email harvesting robots to collect addresses for spam. Could we address this by displaying the email ids as images?

Email obfuscation

All emails are obfuscated using CSS. This allows us to enter and view them as normal, but a bot that crawls for emails to spam gets nonsense.

Email obfuscation

When CSS is applied, the email address appears as my.name -AT- domain.com. There is a tiny javascript on top of CSS that makes it look clean.

Main menu on top

If you let the mouse on a menu for about two seconds you get an explanation box that covers the menus and follows the mouse as you move to other menus. I don't see the need for those explanation boxes (menus should be self-explanatory) but in any case they should not cover the actual menu. The problem is particularly annoying for the "About the Society" menu since the box covers the entire list of submenus.

This fix is in the queue, but we ran out of hours under the current contract while addressing other issues.
