Online Committee Report, ITW 2012

Online Committee report to the BoG, ITW 2012

Summary

The topics covered in this report are the following.

  • Transition to new mailing lists
  • Simpler link to join ITSoc
  • Change of hosting plan
  • Analytics

Transition to new mailing lists

The transition period ended on July 11th, 2012 and a final email was sent to all subscribers of the mailing list [email protected]. The old mailing list had 706 subscribers (including many obsolete emails). As of September 1st, 2012, there were 230 subscribers to the new mailing list. Since all the news items and events are now advertised on the website, it is likely that many people have opted not to subscribe to the new mailing list. In addition, it is likely that a fraction of the subscribers to the old mailing list were one-time subscribers who did not actively followed the mailing list and did not renew their subscription.

On average every news item is also read in feed readers around 130 times (with peaks above 180).

Simpler link to joint ITSoc

IEEE recently launched an IEEE-wide effort to make it easier to join societies. After discussing with IEEE, we added a link on the home page to https://www.ieee.org/membership-catalog/productdetail/showProductDetailPage.html?product=MEMIT012 (see "Join ITSoc" on the main page).

Change of hosting plan

With the increased usage of the website by Schools of IT and the growing numbers of items, we have decided to upgrade the hosting plan. The new hosting plan provides more RAM, which should make the website more reactive, and more disk space, which should avoid us to worry about storage in the near future. The new hosting plan is slightly more expensive ($150/month instead of $119/month), but is more in line with our current needs
Feature Previous hosting plan   New hosting plan
RAM  500 MB 2GB
Disk  10GB  100GB
We are also investigating a sustainable backup strategy. Presently, Six Feet Up performs a weekly backup on tape of the website, and we may want to have our own off-site backup on one of the ITSoc servers.
