Make sure to use the official and current version of IEEEtran.cls!
IEEE offers the LaTeX class "IEEEtran.cls" that provides the correct layout for IEEE-style publications (both conferences and transactions). It also provides powerful math-typesetting tools like IEEEeqnarray and similar.
Unfortunately, there exist many tampered versions of IEEEtran.cls that result in a potentially very bad layout! Please make sure to use the official and current version of IEEEtran.cls!

The official and most current version of IEEEtran.cls and IEEEtrantools.sty can be downloaded from

http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/IEEEtran/

At the moment, the current versions are

  • IEEEtran.cls: version 1.8a
  • IEEEtrantools.sty: version 1.4

A current texlive-installation should automatically have the most current version installed. You can check which version is used by your LaTeX-system using the following commands:

  • kpsewhich IEEEtran.cls
  • less `kpsewhich IEEEtran.cls`
  • kpsewhich IEEEtrantools.sty
  • less `kpsewhich IEEEtrantools.sty`

For more info on the usage of IEEEeqnarray, see the manual
