The IT Society's Aaron D. Wyner Distinguished Service Award was established to honor an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the information theory community and who has provided long and distinguished service to the community. Each Wyner Award recipient receives an ISIT or ITW registration fee waiver and a specially engraved plaque. This award was established in 2004 as the IT Society Distinguished Service Award, but renamed in honor or Aaron D. Wyner in 2005.

The recipient of the 2024 award is Urbashi Mitra, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Southern California. She is being recognized for her tremendous service over many years, most recently for her efforts as General Co-Chair of ISIT2024 in Athens. Professor Mitra also served as TPC co-chair for both ISIT'14 (Honolulu, Hawaii) and ITW'14 (Hobart, Tasmania, Australia). She has served twice on the Editorial Board of IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, as an Associate Editor and then as an Area Editor. She has served on the Steering Committee of BITS Magazine, on many ITSoc committees, and for four terms as an elected member of the ITSoc Board of Governors, for a total of 12 years. Ubli has also provided significant service to the rest of IEEE. She has served on numerous IEEE-level medal and awards committees, and has been a member of the ComSoc Board-of-Governors and the Signal Processing Society Awards-Board and Fellows Committee, as well as an AE for the Transactions of both societies. She was the first Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Molecular, Biological, and multi-scale Communications.
