The Information Theory Society awards its highest honor, the Claude E. Shannon Award, annually. The purpose of this award is to honor consistent and profound contributions to the field of information theory. The recipient is chosen by a selection committee consisting of Society officers and two former Shannon Award recipients.
Dr. Neil Sloane of AT&T Research has been selected by the IEEE Information Theory Society as the recipient of the 1997 Claude E. Shannon Award.
The Koji Kobayashi Computers and Communications Award is given annually by the IEEE to an individual or group of no more than three who have made outstanding technical contributions in the integration of computers and communications with the past ten years.
Prof. Jack K. Wolf of the University of San Diego has been selected by the IEEE as the recipient of the 1998 Koji Kobayashi Award.
