About this Web Site

This is the official Web Site of the IEEE Information Theory Society.

It (also known as it.ucsd.edu, IP #: 132.239.24.167) is maintained by Ramesh Rao, the Web Editor of the IEEE Information Theory Society. Please e-mail questions, suggestions and comments to rrao@ucsd.edu.

Most of the files in this site are in the html format. Web browsers are always able to dipslay plain text html files quite well. Technical manuscripts with equations are not as easy to deal with. Such manuscripts can be translated from latex to html using the latex2html translator. This translator generates a gif file for each equation and links it all together to create a collection of html files. The final quality depends on the particulars of the Web browser being used. The alignment between the equations and the text can range from the sublime to the awful.

Another alternative is to leave the manuscript in the Postscript format. If the browser can spawn a postscript previewer then the manuscript can be viewed with no distortions. Not all browsers seem capable of this and hence we are led to the latest solution using the new pdf (portable document format). Adobe makes pdf viewers (Acrobat Reader) freely available. Unlike most Postscript previewers, PDF previewers can search the pdf document.

For more information on Acrobat Reader and PDF please visit the adobe site. Information on latex2html is available at a number of sites including the original latex2html site at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.
