ESSEN MEETING ON FUNDAMENTAL STRUCTURES OF INFORMATION

August 21-23, 1996

Essen, Germany

From August 21-23, the 6th Benelux Japan meeting was organized in cooperation with scientists from the JSPS-DFG (Japan-Germany) project on "Fundamental Structures of Information Theory" and scientists from the European INTAS (the Netherlands-Germany-Armenia) Project "Combinatorial Information Theory." Participants from Japan, Armenia, Germany and the Benelux discussed a broad spectrum of problems within information theory. The meeting in Essen attracted 25 scientists, and 16 presentations were held in the Institute for Experimental Mathematics. In a very clear presentation, Prof. Te Sun Han showed a new theory for finding the channel capacity for very general channels. In the tutorial "Approaching the Channel Capacity of Constrained Channels," Kees Immink from Philips Research gave an eye-opening lecture for the audience. Other topics included multi-access techniques, source coding, cryptography, synchronization, and Shannon theory. Proceedings will be available from Prof. A.J. Han Vinck, University of Essen, email vinck@exp-math.uni-essen.de.
