Kees A.
Schouhamer Immink was awarded the 1994 A.M.
Poniatoff Medal for Technical Excellence by The Society of Motion Picture and
Television Engineers for his major contributions to digital audio and video
recorders.
He developed coding schemes for a large variety of
consumer-type recording
systems such as the Compact Disc (and its many derivatives CD-R, CD-ROM,
and CD-I), MiniDisc,
Digital Compact Cassette, and DVCR.
The award committee concluded that the impact of Immink's work on consumer
electronics is so great that it is virtually impossible to listen to digital
audio played on
magnetic, magneto-optical,
or optical recorders that do not use one
or more of his basic patents.
Immink's entire professional career has been spent at Philips Research,
Eindhoven, The Netherlands, where he is currently a chief scientist.
The medal is named after A.M.
Poniatoff who founded Ampex Corporation in
1947.
