Jacob Ziv, a distinguished professor at the Electrical Engineering
Department at the Technion is the recipient-elect of the 21st Marconi
Award for his contributions to the fields of communications and
information theory and for his work on the Lempel-Ziv data compression
algorithm. The award will be granted by the President of Italy
at the presentation ceremonies on June 22, 1995 in Bologna, Italy.

Jacob Ziv, Technion Distinguished Professor, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel, was awarded the 1995 IEEE RICHARD W. HAMMING MEDAL for contributions to information theory, and the theory and practice of data compression.

Irwin Mark Jacobs, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of QUALCOMM, Inc., San Diego, CA, was awarded the 1995 IEEE ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL MEDAL for outstanding contributions to telecommunications, including leadership, theory, practice and product development"

Kees A. Schouhamer Immink was awarded the 1994 A.M. Poniatoff Medal for Technical Excellence by The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers for his major contributions to digital audio and video recorders. He developed coding schemes for a large variety of
consumer-type recording systems such as the Compact Disc (and its many derivatives CD-R, CD-ROM, and CD-I), MiniDisc,
Digital Compact Cassette, and DVCR. The award committee concluded that the impact of Immink's work on consumer electronics is so great that it is virtually impossible to listen to digital audio played on
magnetic, magneto-optical, or optical recorders that do not use one
or more of his basic patents. Immink's entire professional career has been spent at Philips Research, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, where he is currently a chief scientist. The medal is named after A.M. Poniatoff who founded Ampex Corporation in 1947.
