AWARDS Kees A. Schouhamer Immink has been named the recipient of the 1996 IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award. The award is given for his "pioneering contributions to consumer digital audio and video recorders". The Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award was established by the IEEE in 1987 and is presented for outstanding contributions to consumer electronics technology. The award is named in honor of Dr Masaru Ibuka, honorary chairman and co-founder of Sony Corporation. Kees Immink has worked his entire professional life at the Philips' Research Laboratories in Eindhoven, where he is currently a Research Fellow. He contributed to the design and development of a variety of digital audio and video recorders such as the Compact Disc, Compact Disc Video, DAT, DCC, and MultiMedia Compact Disc. He holds 35 US Patents, has (co)authored three books and numerous papers in the field of coding techniques for optical and magnetic recorders. He is a Fellow of the AES, IEE, and IEEE; furthermore he received the AES Silver Medal in 1992, the IEE Sir J. J. Thomson Medal in 1993, the SMPTE Poniatoff Gold Medal for Technical Excellence in 1994.
