Joao Carlos Leandro da Silva received the B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Connecticut, Storrs in 1989. He pursued graduate studies at the Instituto Superior Tecnico in Portugal and completed all course work for the master degree in physics.

He was a scientific associate of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in 1992. Later he was employed by the Electro-Mechanics Division of Samsung as a production engineer. From 1999 onwards he worked in several different countries including Italy and Israel. Since 2005 he collaborated with Wolfram Research Inc. and published a book entitled "The Rainbow of Primes" in 2009.

Currently, he is a consultant in cryptography. His research interests are in public-key cryptography, cryptanalysis, integer factoring algorithms, random number generation and primality testing.
