The James. L Massey award recognizes outstanding achievement in research and teaching by a Society member under 40 years of age in the Information Theory community. The award is given annually to a single recipient and includes a plaque and $1000 honorarium.

The IEEE Information Theory Society invites nominations for the James L. Massey Research and Teaching Award for Young Scholars .   The award winner must be 40 years old or younger and a member of the IEEE Information Theory Society on January 1st of the year nominated.

This award is named in honor of James L. Massey, who was an internationally acclaimed pioneer in digital communications and a revered teacher and mentor to an entire generation of communications engineers. He was one of the outstanding researchers and leaders of the IEEE Information Theory Society over a period of 50 years.

Open nominations for the Award can be submitted by using the Massey Award Nomination Form . The individual or individuals making the nomination have the opportunity to briefly articulate why the nominee should receive the award. Nominations are due by  April 30, 2015 .
